SBC Plans Public Wi-Fi Network

It seems like every telecom company is suddenly looking into building their own public WiFi network - which could mean plenty of trouble for early hotspot operators or aggregators like Boingo. Following Verizon's announcements last week, SBC is now saying that they, too, will offer WiFi. They even have a "Vice President of Wi-Fi" (now, that's quite a title). It sounds like this announcement was really just prompted by the Verizon announcement last week, and the plans aren't even remotely fleshed out yet. There's no indication if this is going to just be for SBC DSL subscribers or anyone can sign up. I'm sure Boingo's response will be something to the effect of this "validating the market", and that they'll try to sign them up as a partner provider - but the need for Boingo may diminish as the telecom players cover increasingly large areas with WiFi on their own.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
