Porn Industry Profits From File Sharing

from the wake-up-Hollywood... dept

We had a similar article a few weeks ago, but here's yet another article talking about all the porn that is being shared on file sharing networks and how the porn industry has learned to embrace the technology in order to profit from it - rather than try to shut it down like the rest of the entertainment industry. As someone in the article says: "Any smart merchant can't look at a mall filled with 200 million people and not look at the opportunities to set up a kiosk." Hopefully, more of these articles will pop up and someone in the non-porn entertainment industry will realize "hey, we can do that too...". Of course, a more likely scenario is that they'll miss the point and continue to use the fact that people share porn to scare advertisers away from file sharing networks and to convince Congress that file sharing must be evil. It's amazing how hard the entertainment industry works to shut down one of the greatest promotions and distributions mechanisms they've been handed.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
