Fees Rile Spam Foes
from the oops dept
Cloudmark got a ton of publicity when they launched their "distributed" P2P spam catching application, but they've just made a strategic error. Generally speaking, if you're getting people to help you build your product for free - you probably shouldn't turn around and charge them, but that's exactly what Cloudmark has decided to do. It makes much more sense to continue to offer the free product, and charge for added value. When they first launched, they had indicated that the consumer version would always be free - and they would make money on the corporate version. Of course, there's plenty of competition in the space, and so they've decided that the consumer version shouldn't be free either. In the case of Cloudmark - more than other anti-spam companies - this move is incredibly dangerous because they're clearly going to lose the large majority of their free users - who are the ones who create the database of spam that makes the product work. By charging for the product, they're actually making the product not work as well. This doesn't seem all that well thought out.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

I can't see many people paying $4 a month for their service. Yes, it works pretty well, but $50 a year to delete emails? Forget it...
