Tracking Your Every Media Move

from the we-know-where-you-are-and-what-you-watch dept

Here's more evidence that "Big Brother" is much more likely to be incorporated than elected. While last week we had a story about Nielsen and Arbitron tracking what billboards people use by putting GPS devices in their cars, it sounds like they don't even need to be so specific any more. Arbitron is running a trial where they give people their very own portable people meter - a pager sized device that automatically tracks whatever media you happen to be consuming (TV, radio) while also noting your location. They say the device can accurately link things like what TV shows you like and how they correlate with which stores your prefer to shop at. And they get people to carry these things around for them? Beyond just the basic issue of having yet another device to hang onto (I've run out of pockets, personally), it's fairly stunning what sorts of information many people are just willing to give up. The article is a little short on details about how the device works, so I'm a little unclear on how it automatically knows what channels you're surfing and if it's using GPS to track your location.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    I'd do it.

If it meant that my opinion on what shows belong on TV would actually matter... and if they paid me. :-)

    Used?

"billboards they use" - I have never used a billboard in my life. Do they mean the billboards that I am forced to look at because they insist on cluttering the landscape with the huge ugly things?

    Now would they...

pay me if I didn't even watch TV or listen to the radio? I don't do either, so it's a free five bucks... I wouldn't be giving them anything they didn't already know ;)
