Student Created Fake Airline, Sold Tickets Online
from the amazing-what-you-can-do-online dept
The old saying was that, "on the internet, no one knows you're a dog". Well, an update on that saying might be, "on the internet, no one knows your airline is staffed entirely by one college freshman". Apparently, an 18-year-old college freshman set up a fake airline site for "Mainline Airways", promising $89 flights from Los Angeles to Honolulu, and convinced 121 people to pony up for tickets for the airline's "maiden voyage" on July 3rd. Of course, there were a number of problems, not the least of which was that the airline was incorporated in the kid's dorm room, and had no planes and no employees. It had nothing, basically, other than a website. The kid still claims that he did nothing wrong, saying that it was never really an airline, but a "tour operator" and he was working to sign up airlines to run charters for him. However, the Massachusetts Attorney General isn't so forgiving, saying that this is outright fraud, and is considering filing criminal charges.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
