CA: Don't Believe The Wireless Mega-Hype

The "chief wireless strategist" for Computer Associates is saying that there's too much hype in the wireless space right now. Gee, tell us something we don't know. Anyway, his complaint is that this is just another internet bubble, and Computer Associated doesn't know where to spend its money when it comes to wireless. His problem is that he can't find the killer app, and therefore, there can't be a killer app. While I agree that there's too much general hype about wireless, that doesn't mean it's not a big deal and won't have a huge impact on their business. His main complaints seems to be that there's to much VC money flowing into wireless companies, without any clear business proposition. Of course, that's exactly how venture capital works. Many of those companies will fail, and much of that money will be "wasted", but it's the aggregate nature of the bets that lets the really useful solutions rise to the top.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
