Web Caters To Food Obsessions
from the mmmmmmmmmm dept
I must admit that this article touches a nerve. There are a number of food establishments from earlier in my life that I now miss terribly, such as Mamoun's Falafel in the Village or Hot Truck in Ithaca, NY. It appears I am not alone in the occasional craving for food from my past. Many restaurants are realizing such things and are now offering up online deliveries - even if it's across the country. There are a few companies that focus on this market by setting up sites to deliver "memorable" foods from certain local establishments, even if the restaurant itself doesn't offer internet delivery. So, for example, I could order myself up a White Castle hamburger, even though, I'm thousands of miles from the nearest White Castle. Of course, White Castle was so scary even when you got it "fresh", I'd hate to see what it would be like after a couple of days, and thousands of miles, on dry ice. And, of course, shipping such foods is not cheap. A few years back when Hot Truck offered up such an offer, the fact that it would cost nearly $100 to get 4 PMPs (pizza subs, for those of you not in the know) didn't seem quite worth it - no matter how much I craved them.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
