Stuff The Office - Let's All Go To The Beach
from the the-powers-of-WiFi dept
The folks over at G2, the Guardian's online edition, decided it was about time they understood the power of WiFi to transform how people work. What better way to do so, they figured, than to head down to the recently hotspotted Brighton beach, where there's a "pier to pier" wireless offering. So they took the entire staff down to the beach and tried to produce an entire issue of G2 from the beach. They had some troubles. Staying connected wasn't particularly easy (example conversation: "Are you on?" followed up with a "No", or, "Yes... oh... no."). They also discovered that most laptops are almost entirely unusable in sunlight. However, once they got it going, they realized that it certainly did open up plenty of possibilities. No surprise, of course, to anyone who uses WiFi regularly, but an amusing story either way.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Dreaming vs. Reality
Besides the glare problem which was discussed, how productive would you REALLY be at the beach? I see people reviewing contracts, etc. around the community pool, but often I see them sleeping, keeping an eye on the babes, etc. I think it would be a good excuse when you weren't busy (boss, I'm going to work at the beach), but it would really be when you don't really feel like working or don't have a lot of work to do (like I am doing here posting on some blog).
