Local Cops On The ID Theft Beat

from the educating-the-cops dept

Well, it appears that the federal government has finally realized that (a) identity theft is a large and growing problem and (b) most local police don't know (or do) a damn thing about it. So, the Secret Service, the FTC, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the International Association of Chiefs of Police, have put together a nice little educational package that is being sent out to police departments around the country telling them how to deal with identity theft cases. Of course, it sounds like they're giving them just the most basic information. As the number of identity theft victims grows, it's likely that authorities are going to feel compelled to do quite a bit more to prevent identity theft - though, like so many things, I wonder if this is the sort of crime that can be better stopped via technology than new laws.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
