Marriott Touts Free Broadband
A lot of noise on the web today about Marriott hotels' plan to offer broadband for free in their cheaper hotels, namely Courtyard, Residence Inn, TownePlace Suites and SpringHill Suites. Meanwhile, at the higher end hotels, Marriott and Renaissance, they will continue to charge for broadband in a package that includes free local and long distance calling for $10. The problem is, most people on the web are reporting that Marriott is offering free WiFi, but I can't find any evidence of this, as the press release seems to focus on wired connections. If anyone can clear up whether WiFi is included, please comment below. Either way, broadband at hotels is becoming increasingly important to attract and retain business travelers, most of whom pay rack rates rooms and sport laptops. Free attracts them even more. I refuse to stay at a US hotel that has no broadband, and call ahead to confirm.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
