Summer Camp For Web Addiction

from the Betty-Ford-for-kids dept

The point of summer camp, generally, is to get kids out in the sun, and doing outdoorsy stuff. There are some computer camps, but, for the most part, computers and camp don't mix at all. So, I'm not really sure what's different about this one summer camp in Germany, but they're marketing themselves as a way to break kids of their online addiction. Seems like a marketing ploy to me. Just about any summer camp (minus the computer ones) would have the same effect. All this one really does is bring up unfounded fears about the "dangers" of internet addiction.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Break the cycle

If the kids use the computer to avoid normal socialization, then it creates a cycle in which normal socialization becomes traumatic, hostile experiences. A camp designed specifically for such kids would help them, instead of them becoming the kid who always gets basketballs bounced off his head.

Having basketballs bounced on your head keeps it from getting pointy.
