Waking Up The Telemarketers

from the prank-calls dept

Comedian Tom Mabe has picked excellent timing to release his latest album, A Wake Up Call for Telemarketers, since there's so much focus these days on telemarketing. The album is based on phone calls made when he stayed at the same hotel as a bunch of telemarketers during a telemarketing conference, and then called them in the middle of the night to talk to them about the Telemarketers With Insomnia Foundation. Of course, now that the national Do Not Call List has come out, there may not be as much interest in his brand of humor (he also put out two other comic CDs where he gets "revenge" on telemarketers who call him). However, he's not afraid. He says he's now going to take on spammers.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    What about foreign telemarketers?

What if VoIP technology makes it easy for starving children in Africa to call people up asking for money? There will no doubt be the outpouring of sympathy at first, but then people will become annoyed by their persistence.
