Can Video Games Get Respect As Art?

from the how-things-go dept

A reporter who went to a "video game festival" found that video games still get less respect than movies - even in the case where a bad movie and a good video game are associated with each other. He admits that writing movie reviews is much easier, and requires less skill, than writing video game reviews. He also points out that video game reviewers, since they're catering to video game fans, basically have to write the review as someone with gaming expertise, or they'll get trashed by the fans. However, he wonders if all this pandering to the obsessive fans makes it more difficult for video games to enter the realm of "art" and mainstream media attention, like movies and music.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

It seems shortsighted to think that mainstream media attention is what makes something "art".

    Chips as Art

One of the modern art museums (MOMA?) displayed chip designs from Intel a few years ago. If anyone has ever seen one, they DO look like a piece of geometric modern art. I personally find them fascinating, but wouldn't consider it "art", but was a good plug for Intel and some free publicity for MOMA.
