Porn Operators Opening Up To Having Their Own Domain Playground

I have to admit that I never quite understood why the porn industry didn't support the idea of a .xxx top level domain, where they could put all the porn sites. It would make it easier for those looking for porn to find it. However, the industry always responded that by setting up a "gated" community, they were opening themselves up to more restrictions. Now, however, some are beginning to reconsider. Realizing that recent laws are going to restrict them no matter what, they're suddenly a bit more willing to talk about having their own top level domain. While there are still questions about whether or not certain items qualify as porn or not, I don't see any real reason not to support such a top level domain. If the porn operators are hoping that they'll get business by people accidentally finding them, wouldn't it make more sense to concentrate on those folks who are actively looking for porn?

.xxx would not only help to protect the porn people but make it much EASIER for corporations, parental units & others to BLOCK extensions of .xxx if they chose to.

Sounds nice but....
While the first link certainly doesn't fall into the .xxx realm (you are reading it right this minute), the second one does. And I pointed to it without using any kind of domain name. It might help. Then again, doing reverse domain name lookups could also block legitimate sites as well, nor would they scrub the porn out of the rest of the internet.
BTW, the first reverses to techdirt.com, as it should. The second actually resolves to hick.org, but it is also the IP address for goatse.cx Click on that link at your own peril. One IP, but two totally different web sites.

On the other hand, I can't imagine a world without "whitehouse.com" jokes.
Of course, there is the issue of enforcement. At the end of the day, there are some grey areas as to what's classified as "adult" or "pornographic." While we can all think of obvious examples, I worry that artists (ala Robert Maplethorpe) may find themselves stuffed under the pr()n umbrella rather reluctantly. Further, there are sites that are "adult" without being pornographic.
It's still a good idea, tho.
