Porn Operators Opening Up To Having Their Own Domain Playground

from the making-a-bit-of-sense dept

I have to admit that I never quite understood why the porn industry didn't support the idea of a .xxx top level domain, where they could put all the porn sites. It would make it easier for those looking for porn to find it. However, the industry always responded that by setting up a "gated" community, they were opening themselves up to more restrictions. Now, however, some are beginning to reconsider. Realizing that recent laws are going to restrict them no matter what, they're suddenly a bit more willing to talk about having their own top level domain. While there are still questions about whether or not certain items qualify as porn or not, I don't see any real reason not to support such a top level domain. If the porn operators are hoping that they'll get business by people accidentally finding them, wouldn't it make more sense to concentrate on those folks who are actively looking for porn?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    I WANT MY PORN !

I agree whole heartedly ! Why has it taken so long to seperate Porn as we have done with educational sites, military sites, organizational sites, commercial sites ... etc ?
.xxx would not only help to protect the porn people but make it much EASIER for corporations, parental units & others to BLOCK extensions of .xxx if they chose to.
    Is this rocket science ??????

But if you put all your porn on .XXX servers and then filter out .XXX servers, how will they manage to put naughty pictures in your e-mails?

THE MILLIONAIRE AND THE PORN STAR HIT IT BIG

THE MILLIONAIRE AND THE PORN STAR HIT IT BIG

The true story about the woman behind the man.

CAROLYN 101 and YOUR'RE HIRED by Bill Rancic of Donald Trump's APPRENTICE Paves the Way for Other Women to Succeed in Business. There's always a woman behind every man. The woman behind Louis Gerstner at IBM tells her true story in the #1 bestseller NO GREATER DECEPTION A True Texas Story.

HE'S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU authors Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo of SEX IN THE CITY became an overnight bestseller due to starring on the OPRAH WINFREY SHOW last week.

OPRAH has made many new authors millionaires like herself by showcasing their books to her audience. Sydney Newman Dotson is standing in the wings hoping she'll be the next author invited on OPRAH'S SHOW.

Dotson's debut book NO GREATER DECEPTION skyrocketed to #1 on Amazon and Barnes and Noble True Crime Biography Bestseller Lists. Dotson tops Ann Rule, John Glatt, James Patterson and Marion Collins.

"Making the Top 10 Bestseller Lists is wonderful. Becoming the number one true crime biography is outstanding," says Dotson.

“My book should appear on Oprah’s Book Club, the Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Washington Post and USA Today Bestseller Lists shortly. It takes about a week for them to catch up with Amazon and Barnes & Noble sales rankings.”

Despite waves of publicity and a rock-star reception at all her booksignings, Barnes & Noble, Borders and Books a Million Bookstores were not prepared to meet the demand for Dotson’s true story. Customers were often told the book is "not in stock" or "not available."

Residents in Chicago, Houston, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Florida and Atlanta said they called ahead to make sure the book was in stock, then nabbed a copy on Amazon or B&N.com.

Former IBM Director of Corporate Business Intelligence, Sydney Newman Dotson, is a corporate spy turned detective in " NO GREATER DECEPTION, A TRUE TEXAS STORY."

Dotson's family’s friends make them anything but normal. Was it normal for Joe Bonanno to show up at their home? Just how involved was their father in the gambling and prostitution rings along the Galveston Bay? Were his connections to President George Bush, Lyndon Johnson, Lady Bird and Joe Bonanno much deeper than they seemed? Was he involved in the JFK assassination? Was their stepmother the porn queen responsible for his death?

"Deceased victims of identity theft cannot come back from the dead to defend themselves," says Dotson. "It leaves the victims' children to seek justice on their deceased relatives behalf.“

"My stepmother had a brilliant scheme. She opened a number of bank accounts in my father's name. The forged signature on the checks matched the signature on the forged will she produced for my father."

What the two sisters’ forensic handwriting expert, Mrs. Higgins, discovers will send chills up and down your spine. Their lives are in danger and they may have a black widow serial killer on their hands.

"NO GREATER DECEPTION, A TRUE TEXAS STORY" is available on Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com

    Sounds nice but....

using the .xxx domain is still problematic, as the Internet doesn't really use domain names, but those pesky little numbers like 66.209.74.93 and 198.247.175.96. The second link would normally not be work safe.
While the first link certainly doesn't fall into the .xxx realm (you are reading it right this minute), the second one does. And I pointed to it without using any kind of domain name. It might help. Then again, doing reverse domain name lookups could also block legitimate sites as well, nor would they scrub the porn out of the rest of the internet.
BTW, the first reverses to techdirt.com, as it should. The second actually resolves to hick.org, but it is also the IP address for goatse.cx Click on that link at your own peril. One IP, but two totally different web sites.

    Pr()n

For almost ten years I've been recommending a top-level change for adult content. In all honesty, it was my mother (a former librarian) who made the astute observation that the indexing system used by the internet (.com, .net, etc) was rather poorly thought out.

On the other hand, I can't imagine a world without "whitehouse.com" jokes.

Of course, there is the issue of enforcement. At the end of the day, there are some grey areas as to what's classified as "adult" or "pornographic." While we can all think of obvious examples, I worry that artists (ala Robert Maplethorpe) may find themselves stuffed under the pr()n umbrella rather reluctantly. Further, there are sites that are "adult" without being pornographic.

It's still a good idea, tho.
