Finding A Company's Website Isn't Always So Easy

from the so-says-a-company-that-wants-to-help dept

Well, you have to wonder about any study done by a company that is clearly positioned to benefit from the results they found. A company that is trying to convince people to buy keyword names from it, is telling the world about their new study that says many companies have domain names that are difficult to find. They say (which should surprise no one) that most people just try CompanyName.com. Of course with hyphens and different TLDs it doesn't always work. They also found most people are willing to try about three times to find the right website - and then they move on. Of course, how did I find the webpage of the company that did the study? I just popped it into my search toolbar and let Google take me there. That seems much easier - and I didn't have to pay this company for one of their "keywords".

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Done

CommonName.com. This sounds just like RealNames. Do you wonder whatever happened to them and their great idea? If so, just look here:

    CNN

One of the most popular searches on google in times of big news stories is for 'CNN'. 'Cause cnn.com is too hard to figure out on your own....

      Re: CNN

Actually, sometimes I just use the Google toolbar, since it automatically pops up the page in a new window. Plus, if you type in the full name (including the .com) Google just takes you straight to the page. So, it's faster for me to type "cnn.com" into the google toolbar of the browser I have open, then popping open a new browser window and typing cnn.com
