Will Internet Convenience Save Or Harm Democracy?

from the vote-from-home dept

While in the US we've been arguing about whether or not to use electronic voting machines (complete with all sorts of security problems), up in Canada they've already moved on to offering internet-based voting in a few select areas. However, if the lack of accountability is a problem with electronic voting machines, it's even worse when it comes to internet-based voting. So, the article raises some questions about convenience and democracy. Many people say they end up not voting because it's not convenient. So while convenience will add participation, it might come at the cost of vote integrity. Which is more important to democracy: participation and convenience or voting accuracy - and are the two things mutually exclusive?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

I just don't like the idea of some 14 year old script kiddie being able to hack into the election results...voting online will never been secure enough for my tastes, its just too dangerous.
