Why Can't iTunes Connect Directly To My Stereo?

from the be-patient... dept

While everyone is focused on the recent downloadable music store launches, not many people have talked about the leap from music on your computer to music on your stereo. Sure, there are some ways to connect the two, if your technically minded. There are also those who simply move the music to a digital music player and hook that up to a stereo system. However, a group of four big Japanese electronics makers (Sony, Sharp, Pioneer and Kenwood) have decided to create a system that would put a download music store directly in your stereo system, cutting out the need for the computer as the middleman. It will be interesting to see how well these devices do. There already are stereo components to let you stream music off the internet, but not to buy music off the internet. Of course, this only works if people really do adopt downloadable music stores over file sharing, which is still a big question.

What about the Rio devices of a few years ago that let the PC remain as digital hub, but play back the songs thanks to an ethernet connection?

Those are now about 50 bucks

I have a $30 stereo FM transmitter plugged into the sound card on my PC. Works great, very cheap.

Both of the commentors suggestions still have the PC involved in the solution. The point in the new device is to take the PC out of the equation.
