FTC Crackdown On Messenger Spam

from the about-time dept

There have been so many stories about so-called "Messenger Spam" that it's a bit surprising that the FTC just woke up to the problem now. Messenger spam isn't about instant messaging, but having someone send messages to the Windows Messenger application that is normally used by SysAdmins to warn of downtime or something along those lines. Now, the FTC is planning to crack down on the practice. The article is a little unclear on what they're actually going to do other than to say "messenger spam is bad and you should stop doing it." However, the announcement is supposedly tied to a case against two people accused of using those sorts of messenger spam ads.

    Probably not related but

I got a text message on my cell phone today with nonsense poetry from an unknown source. Is that considered WiFi hacking?
