Shirky Trashes The Semantic Web

from the taking-a-step-back dept

In the last few months, I've seen more and more people start trashing the idea of the semantic web, which so many people have been fascinated with for so long. The latest is Clay Shirky who does a good job walking through some of the problems with the ideas behind the semantic web, and in doing so brings up some of the basic issues involved with meta-data. It's not that meta-data isn't useful, but that some folks who are so obsessed with meta-data sometimes miss out on the fact that meta-data doesn't solve everything.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Shirky

Shirky predicts Semantic Web Demise "So if you think Clay Shirky is saying that we do nothing, then you are wrong. He's just asks you to think out of the box, because the world around you isn't what you've been told. Clay Shirky gives you a pretty precise description of the lay of the land, its high time we accept reality."
