China Creates Alternative DVD Format

from the betamax-part-II dept

The Chinese government has just enveiled an alternative to DVD called Enhanced Versatile Disc. China is currently the world's largest manufacturer of DVD players. And understandably, China would like to avoid DVD licensing fees, but this new standard is probably about 5 years too late. Unless the EVDs provide some advantage (no copy protection, ahem), consumers will probably see no benefit in changing the format that they use. And what sort of crazy content provider(s) would license to this new format?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

easy, for a while they produce dvd players that do both standards (& divx) & buy / force local media to produce evd. after a while they make cheap evd players only... very murdoch/faux studios style

    Questions about EVD ...

I've read several articles this morning about this.
My question that has not been answered by any of the articles is this: What will EVD's do that DVD's do not ? What is the enhancement to make me run right out and buy a combo DVD/EVD/CD/CDR/CDRW/DVD etc player ?

EVD will offer upto 5 times better quality. I was going to buy DVD recorder but i may go with EVD bcz it looks like this will be the newest and latest thing to come out.

    Questions about EVD ...

i read a very good article about this today. basically it said that china basically produces most dvd players already, have a large internal market, and have enough usa - china trade flow to basically f*ck over both micr$oft's new drm & the current dvd move studio cartel. basically, when micro$oft comes out with the new drm format, you know its going to cost (xbox style) say $400. if china is smart, they make new evd only players for $50 AND they also produce (free) software that allows you to rip current dvd & burn / create evd's. once the asian 'movie pirate's' start producing bulk evd's & people pick up a $50 evd player, the chinese can basically say to hollywood - play our game & get a cut or dont & miss out.
the article was on front page of http://www.aardvark.co.nz/ aka mr cruise missile :)
