Jacking Into Others' iPods?
from the how-often-does-this-really-happen? dept
This reads like something of an urban myth (or at least a situation where a very small group of people are involved in it), but Wired News is running a story about iPod jack sharing, where random people, as they walk around will "share" their iPods with other iPod users. They'll notice another iPod user, walk over to them, and (often without speaking) offer to let the other listener jack into their iPod. People in the article describe it like being a personal DJ for another person (and being able to see how much they like your music) while others say it's just like an extension of file sharing. I wonder how prevalent it really is. The guy who seems to be promoting the idea claimed that it happens all the time on the Pixar campus, but someone from Pixar claims they've never seen it. This feels just like the whole "war chalking" craze. Something that sounds kind of cool, but which almost no one actually takes part in. Of course, once music players with Bluetooth become popular, I can imagine stories of people sneaking a listen on others iPods, or of people somehow sneakily forcing their music onto other users' headphones via Bluejacking.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
