Attack Of The Online Home Movies

from the oh-noooooooooo dept

Over the Thanksgiving holidays I'm sure that many people were forced to view various vacation pictures from relatives. It happened to me. This year, though, instead of flipping through albums, the photos were stored on a laptop (and will go up on the web at some point soon). Admittedly, in my case, the photos were cool, and I enjoyed viewing them. However, that's not true for everyone - and now, this article points out that the next trend is going to be for everyone to start putting their vacation videos online as well. While lots of people took home videos and put them in VHS format, you could avoid watching them, so long as you stayed out of a room with them that had a TV and VCR. However, as everyone is figuring out how to create home videos with modern technology, it's going to become impossible to avoid watching all of your friends' and relatives' home and vacation videos. Of course, while the writer fears the end result of this, there's an easy workaround. Now, instead of being forced to sit through the videos in person, you can just tell the people "send me the URL and I'll watch it at home...." Isn't technology great?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Last year I created a retrospective of the 15 years I have known my wife, with pictures from our first date in college up to the present. The whole thing was on DVD, set to music, etc. I was quite proud of myself :) I spent a good chuck of this4 day weekend working on the 2003 edition. This year is much easier as all the source material is already digital. Last year I spent about 40 hours scanning pictures, cleaning them up in Photoshop, etc. It certaintly does bring a new level of creativity to vacation photos.
