Vodafone Launches 3G For Laptops In Germany, Italy
How does a phone company meet their regulatory requirements to launch a 3G network, address an underserved market, and not run into all the foibles that have plagued Hutchison and FOMA as they launched their 3G voice networks? By launching 3G only for data.Vodafone PLC has Launched a 3G service for laptops equipped with specific PCMCIA cards in Germany and Italy. The service is simpler because the cards are standardized, and they draw battery power from the laptop. However, Vodafone will still have the challenges of limited coverage and tricky handoff to 2.5G networks - it will just be harder for the customer to recognize the service interruption. This seems like a good way of entering the 3G UMTS fray. (sidenote: this is irrelevant for CDMA carriers, who migrate to 3G EV-DO)Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
