Some People Still Won't Get Online
from the money-or-fear dept
While for many of us, the internet has become a central part of our lives, there are still many Americans who haven't bothered with the internet. In many cases, it is still a money issue. While it's getting cheaper all the time, for some it's still difficult to justify a computer purchase and a monthly ISP. For others, it's a fear issue. There are so many stories about all the bad stuff online that many are afraid to even try it out.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

It's more than that...
Until really good voice recognition and reasonabley "ubiquitous" operting sytems and devices come along, there will always be a segment of the population (as high as 20% by some estimates) that will never use personal computers on a daily basis.
As for me, I mitigate all the bad stuff out there using knoppix live CD, Virtual PC and keep all of my "production" desktops off the Internet in general. harsh, but it works.
