Microsoft Pays Off E-Data Over Downloading Patent

from the leave-us-alone dept

Microsoft has decided they have more important things to do with their time than fight a silly patent from a company that claims they have a European patent on downloading information onto a tangible product (yes, that received a patent). While we covered the original lawsuit, Microsoft has apparently decided to just pay E-Data to leave them alone. Of course, E-Data will now use this payoff from Microsoft to hit up just about everyone else to get them to pay up as well. They've already stated that anyone who dares to offer a music download service in Europe (including Apple) had better be prepared to drop some cash at the E-Data patent tollbooth. Once again, how does this encourage innovation? All this has done is make it more difficult and expensive to offer an obvious service.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    They need all their lawyers

I guess they need all their lawyers to go after 17 years old kids. Besides money paid for patent disputes can be passed on to their customers.

Sounds about right. You know how dangerous the Mike Rowes of the world can be.

      But seriously,
I think that Microsoft is becoming the first place people sue when they have a stupid patent. With the exception of the Eolas patent, they haven't even bothered fighting them lately. It's a pisser.
