Internet Voting System Fundamentally Flawed
from the no,-really,-tell-us-how-you-feel dept
A new internet voting system designed to let overseas US military personnel cast their absentee ballots online was heavily criticized in a report today, suggesting that it's nowhere near secure, and nothing can be done to make it secure, until some fundamental aspects of the internet are changed. The report describes a number of fairly basic ways that the system could be attacked, and the integrity of votes could be jeopardized. The folks backing the system brushed off the criticism by saying, more or less, "thanks, but we don't care - we've got other experts who say it's just dandy, and we'll pick the experts we like better." Of course, when it comes to security, it's nice when you can make your critics happy too. You don't really have the option of just picking the folks who support what you'd like to believe.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
