Google Background Check On Date Catches Fugitive
from the your-permanent-record dept
Thanks to John for submitting this story about just how useful it might be to Google your dates. Of course, this has been known for years. It's been more than three years since we first posted stories about Googling dates as a poor man's background check. While, for most people, it's just an amusing and quick way to find out a little more about the person you're meeting up with, sometimes you can turn up quite a bit. In this case, a quick Googling turned up the fact that the guy a woman was about to meet was a wanted fugitive who had eluded authorities for over a year. Once again, it appears that Google really is your permanent record. Of course, you have to wonder... if you're a fugitive with the FBI trying to track you down, why are you going to use your real name on a date?Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

It's a neat story. I can't believe he used his real name.
