Here Come The Bigger And Bigger MyDoom Damage Estimates
from the based-on...-what-exactly? dept
Jeremy Wagstaff has put together a nice summary (much of it based on pointers from vmyths.com) about the expected response from anti-virus firms who want to make sure that they quote the largest possible number of potential "damages" from the myDoom virus to make sure they get quoted in press articles. The winner is British security consultant mi2g, who claims damages will reach $38.5 billion - a number that is already being picked up by the press at a pretty rapid clip (be sure to play along at home and track the mentions). There is no basis given for the number, but they'll give you more details if you pay them money for a report. Reporters, for the most part, aren't concerned about the details, but like to have an actual number to throw out there and quote as a fact.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
