Cheaper CDs Available Again At CD Wow... But How?

from the interesting.. dept

CD Wow, the UK-based online CD seller that got slapped down last week for daring to order (completely legitimate) CDs from overseas and reselling them in the UK at cheaper prices than their competitors, has now dropped their prices again. After they were told they had to stop, they raised their prices to account for the higher local prices of the exact same CDs. However, they're now claiming that local suppliers have agreed to a deal that would lower the prices of the CDs so that CD Wow can continue to sell at their older, lower prices. While the details of the deal aren't clear, what's most interesting to me is that this is the inevitable result of arbitrage anyway. Prices tend to even out over time, as it becomes easier for companies to move products from one location to another. So, all the work to force CD Wow to raise their prices via a protectionist policy in the UK seems to have only served the purpose of convincing suppliers to lower their prices. Now, it will be interesting to see if other local retailers also demand lower prices from their domestic suppliers. In the end, this could cause much lower overall prices around the UK. When CD Wow had relationships with Asian suppliers, it was a barrier for other retailers - but now that other retailers realize their existing suppliers may offer a better deal, they'll ask for it as well. Thus, the plan to force the UK to pay higher CD prices may have the opposite effect.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    No Subject Given

This is great news. I think they may have been moving this way already though.

My latest purchase from CDWow was purchased at the low price (before the 'agreement') but I received it after the agreement. It was shipped to me in Finland from Sweden, not Hong Kong. IIRC, they used to ship out of Hong Kong but may already have set up their European network before the agreement was finalised. I guess they used the Asian prices to get a good deal in Sweden...

I don;t think is significant. Whilst most CD-Wow mail came from HK, I have had packages from Sweden and the Netherlands in the past.
