Amazon Accidentally Reveals Authors Giving Themselves Five Stars

from the such-a-wonderful-book... dept

Someone I know who's a successful fiction author once told me that the first five or so reviews of his latest book on Amazon all came from family and friends. Since then, I've been a bit more careful when reading the various Amazon reviews. Last week, though, Amazon's Canadian site had a bit of a glitch that revealed a little more than was expected in the reviews. Any anonymous reviewer was suddenly shown with their full name - which meant that authors who reviewed their own books were suddenly unmasked. Not surprisingly, they seemed to give themselves high marks. It seems like this should be fairly simple to prevent. While Amazon does keep the names anonymous, they obviously know who they are. Therefore, if the (hidden) name matches the name of the author, the review should be disallowed. Of course, that just means reviewers will do their reviews under other names...

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
