Do Mobile Devices Need Their Own Domain?

from the .mob-it-is- dept

The Register is reporting that Microsoft, Vodafone and Nokia are trying to convince ICANN to grant them their own domain for mobile devices, which the Register jokingly (I think) suggests should be .mob. Of course, knowing just how many groups have applied to ICANN for different top level domains, and knowing just how many were rejected - combined with the sub-glacial speed with which ICANN is known for moving, I would bet that this is unlikely to happen any time soon, if ever. Still, it is an interesting question as to whether or not we need an additional TLD for mobile devices. As connections get faster is it really going to make as much sense, or will mobile phones be able to hang out on the regular internet without any problem?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Mobile domain

No, they don't need this extra domain. Not even because of more available wireless bandwith. It's not so difficult to recognize a mobile device when it requests certain information from a webserver. So why make it difficult for people by offering different domains? Let technology be the solution.
