Snail Mail The Way To Go Down Under... Or Is It?

from the who-needs-efficiency?!? dept

While the concept of "snail mail" seems so... last millennium to many people, down in Australia, they have no problem taking it slow. A new study has found that people in Australia prefer snail mail to email and SMS messages. Of course, you have to be a bit skeptical, because this study was sponsored by the Australian Post Office, who clearly has a reason to delude themselves. With such odd sounding results, it pays to look a little more closely at the details - and those say that the study focused on individuals' "media preferences for receiving different types of marketing and business communication." Suddenly, it makes a lot more sense: they asked people how they prefer to be spammed. On the whole, if you must be spammed, snail mail spam is much easier to deal with for most people. So, despite what the study tries to claim, this looks more like a case where people were saying the best way to minimize annoyances - not how they actually want to "receive communications."

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
