AMD Builds A WiFi Network By Questionable Means
from the so-that's-how-you-do-it... dept
Last week we wrote about claims that AMD was going to offer free hotspots by pointing out that it sounded like a more truthful description of the situation was that they were going around asking free hotspots to provide AMD stickers in the window - something of a contrast to Intel's Centrino program that involved Intel employees going out and testing every hotspot they approved. Now, WiFi Networking News has done a bit of sleuthing and turned up that AMD is, indeed, just asking those who have already set up WiFi hotspots to be included in their directory. Worse, in many instances, they're just putting up the stickers at locations - without consent by location owners, or the operators of the WiFi hotspots. While some shop owners don't mind (more publicity and all that), others are quite annoyed at this bit of corporate vandalism.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
