Sun's Problems With Microsoft Are Nothing A Couple Billion Can't Solve
from the what's-$2-billion-between-friends? dept
Ah, the things you can do when you have $40 or $50 billion of cash lying around. Discovering that the various Sun lawsuits against Microsoft were beginning to get annoying, Microsoft has swatted that fly with a $1.95 billion payout. In exchange, Sun will open their wallet and shut their mouth. The payments are specifically divided into three categories: $700 million for "antitrust issues", $900 million for patent issues and $350 million for up-front royalties for technology Sun will be sharing with Microsoft. If I read this correctly, it certainly sounds like Sun just got more out of Microsoft for anti-trust violations than the entire EU did.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

The EU has nothing (except cash) and MS will get that (and recoup their fine) with the next round of upgrades.
