California Bans All E-Voting Machines
from the take-that dept
We knew that California Secretary of State Kevin Shelley understood the real issues involved with complaints concerning electronic voting machines. After all, he was the one last year who said that all electronic voting machines in California should have a paper trail. Now, following a recommendation last week concerning problems with the way Diebold managed their e-voting machines, Shelley has gone even beyond the recommendations to say that all electronic voting machines will be banned from the state, unless they implement a certifiable paper trail or put in place a specific list of 23 security measures. At the end of the article, he also appears to indicate that he's asking the state Attorney General to file charges against Diebold for knowingly breaking the law.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

The only voting machines that have been banned are the Diebold AccuVote-TSx machines that were being used in 4 counties. That is all.
Electronic voting machines in 10 other counties still can (and probably will) be used (INCLUDING OLDER DIEBOLD MODELS) if they provide a paper ballot alternative and adhere to additional security measures.
THE VOTING MACHINES ALREADY CERTIFIED DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE A CERTIFIABLE PAPER TRAIL. Only new machines that may be added later.
