Sharing The Family PC Is Patent-Pending

from the patents-galore dept

theodp writes "While Mainframe and Unix users are unlikely to find it novel that Windows XP allows several family members to share a PC while enabling each to have personalized settings and folders, that's not stopping Microsoft from seeking a patent for Methods and arrangements for providing multiple concurrent desktops and workspaces in a shared computing environment, the USPTO disclosed Thursday."

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    silly microsoft...

So they're essentially seeking a patent on Unix style logins. They won't get it. AT&T had that patent. It expired five years ago. Sorry M$

But the Patent Office doesn't seem to care whether a patent claim is really new. So most likely the patent will be granted and someone will have to go to court to fight it.

    Public Review

Maybe we need a mandatory public review process during which time people can peruse the list of patents awaiting approval and submit prior art PRIOR to the patent being approved...

Given the currently blizard of Microsoft patent applications, I wonder if this, and many others, are "wild geese" designed to distract from something much more important?
