Google To Rehash Every Dot Com Boom Idea
from the so-many-announcements... dept
Google sure does know how to bunch up those announcements. In the last month and a half (not even), they've announced Gmail, an IPO, and their new version of Blogger. Today, though, they made it clear that they intend to be the second coming of nearly every boom-time dot com idea. First they announced that they want to be Doubleclick, and now they've announced that they want to be eGroups. eGroups, of course, is now YahooGroups, and is pretty popular as a place to maintain mailing lists. While some in the blogging community insist that mailings lists are pointless in an age of blogs, plenty of people still find them quite useful. What's interesting, though, is that Google already has "Google Groups" - which is what they got when they bought Deja's Usenet archives and then expanded them (massively). With this new Groups2 offering, Google apparently intends to somehow merge it into the original Google Groups, making the Usenet postings and mailings lists connected in one big interface - all searchable by Google, and all sporting lovely Google ads (now... with pictures!).Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
