Lycos Jumps On The 1Gb Email Train (But Not Really)

from the hey-look-at-that... dept

As expected, lots of other providers are trying to jump on the 1 gig of email train started by Google's Gmail announcement last month. Yahoo already announced their version which is actually 100mb of free storage for email and "virtually unlimited" storage for paid accounts (though the very real limits are not explained). Lycos, however, has marketing people who realize the entire focus is on that "1 gig" number and have announced that they've beaten Google to the punch by offering 1 gig of email storage today. Of course, beneath that comes the fine print that points out the one gig is only for paid users. Free users have a very Yahoo-like 100 mb.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    um

I'm still confused why everyone is saying Lyco's has beaten google to the punch.

Google announces it's offering 1 gig,

    everyone follows.

Because Gmail is still in limited beta, people are giving credit to lycos?

Thats lame, and the best thing about Gmail isnt the storage, thats just a nice side benefit. The program really shines in its search and handling of e-mail as "conversations".

    No Subject Given

Nope, free users have 10MB, then there are 2 paid tiers with 100MB and 1GB respectively.
