Telemarketers Searching For Do Not Call Loopholes

from the uh...-we're-a-charity? dept

This was predicted, but it appears that less-than-honest telemarketers are getting bolder in their attempts to pretend they qualify for the various loophole exemptions to not have to comply with the federal "Do Not Call" list. Among the things they do is say that they're a charitable or political organization (both of which are exempt), and then start pitching financial services that are clearly not charitable or political. Expect these calls to become even more common if enforcement from the FTC is slow.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    You know,
you would think they would get the idea that since the public has overwhealmingly supported this, since congress and the senate got this law passed in a day, and since the ftc has made it enourmously difficult for them to do this that poeple may not want this service. Maybe? You think?

    What about Iraqi telemarketers?

All the young men shooting at our soldiers now could drop their weapons and harrass us another way, via cheap international calls. US telemarketing laws wouldn't apply to them.
