TowerStream Rides Empire Level Publicity

I can't recall a single wireless broadband provider getting so much attention for a single rooftop point-of-presence installation as TowerStream got today for putting their equipment atop the Empire State Building. While this does give TowerStream another rooftop, they were already offering service in New York. It's a good win for them, but not such a huge deal, other than the publicity value. On a good note, however, unlike their last announcement (about offering wireless broadband in Chicago) where they did everything possible to leap on the WiMax bandwagon, this time they've appeared much more honest about where they are in relation to WiMax: "Everyone knows that WiMAX gear is not here yet. We'll hopefully get some WiMAX certified gear in first quarter 2005." In the meantime, with their efforts in New York, Boston and Chicago, it looks like TowerStream is positioning themselves as the experts to go to when it comes to urban wireless broadband. How long until some larger player acquires them?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
