Acacia Decides To Be Friendly And Lower Extortion Demands

from the we're-not-quite-that-evil dept

Apparently realizing that their attempt to force universities to pay up for offering courses streaming online was getting something of a sympathetic reaction, Acacia has decided to reduce their licensing fees for Universities. Perhaps they realized they needed to do something as their attack on universities was making people realize that (a) this never should have been patented in the first place and (b) holding universities hostage via patents demonstrates exactly how patents can be abused. So, now they're hoping they somehow look a bit nicer, by only trying to extort a smaller amount of money from universities. Maybe this will knock them down from the number one spot on the EFF's list of all-around awful patents that need to be pulled.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    No Subject Given

I think you've got the wrong url on the second link in this post. It takes me to a page about automobile blackboxes/insurance.

      Re: No Subject Given

It wasn't the wrong URL when I posted it... I keep forgeting that the Daily Press reuses the *same URLs* each day. It's an incredibly stupid policy, and I need to remember to stop using them.

      Oh well.

I've changed the URL to another version of the story.

      Thanks for pointing it out.
