Where Do You Use Wireless Devices?

from the anywhere,-everywhere dept

If you ever needed more proof that people use wireless devices to help them fill in the "empty" time when it used to be difficult to work or communicate, Harris Interactive has the study for you. They've found that a fair number of people use wireless devices in places that previously were pretty much off-limits towards anything productive: waiting in the drive-through at the fast-food place (22%), while driving (20%) and in the bathroom (15%). This isn't just talking about mobile data, but mobile phone conversations, which would make you think that the numbers should be higher. Of course, they are higher for the younger generation, with 30% of college students admitting they used wireless devices in the bathroom. Of course, whether or not this is a good thing probably depends on whether or not you're one of the people using wireless devices in these places.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Wireless toilets

It was actually several years ago that I first sat in a public toilet, next to a stall in which a guy was talking on his cell phone while taking a dump. The amazing thing is he flushed the toilet without even pausing in his conversation. I hope that guy remembered to wash his cell phone regularly.

    Unusual Wireless Locations

I was in the Borders Book Cafe at the new Time Warner Center in Columbus Circle, New York City. I bought a latte and tried to connect wirelessly using tmobile. The connection was low and I kept losing the signal. Anyway, things being what they are, after an hour, I had to use the Ladies' room. This is New York, so I took my laptop with me. Whaddaya know? The signal was rated very strong in the handicapped stall. I checked all my email and a few favorite blogs. Then I grabbed a magazine from the newsstand and had another latte in the cafe.
