Now Schools Need To Block Advergaming?
from the why-not-teach-them? dept
There are already battles over how much schools need to do to block access to porn and other inappropriate sites from students, and now they are being told to worry about "advergaming" as well. This, of course, is at the same time as corporations are increasingly sneaking into schools in other ways, from McDonald's supplying lunch food to the MPAA teaching lessons about copyright. Instead of worrying how to "block" such things, couldn't it be useful as a lesson? Advertising is clearly a part of our lives, every day. There's no way to avoid it. Why not start teaching kids at a young age how advertising works, and teaching them how to have a more critical mind about what they see and read. Rather than banning it, let it come in, while teaching the students how to deal with it. Won't that do a better job preparing them for adulthood?Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Re: No Subject Given
That's the LAST thing they will teach your children. Critical thinking is NOT on the curriculum anymore because its not productive to those in power.
