Content Or Communication?

from the information-is-a-two-way-street dept

While not trying to pick on one particular speech or announcement from one particular person, there's this overwhelming belief among many in the mobile industry that somehow, mobile entertainment is going to be the biggest thing driving 3G services. It's not clear why everyone says so -- as all the evidence so far, has suggested anything but that would be the case. The applications that have been successful on mobile phones have been about communication, not content. People don't buy mobile phones to be entertained, they buy them to communicate, and expecting them to rush out and buy new phones and service plans just because they'll be able to download a one minute clip of some TV show seems to be putting a lot of faith in the belief that broadcast is still more important than user generated content, when plenty of signs suggest otherwise.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
