The Even Smarter Phone

from the actual-smarts? dept

To some extent the concept of the "smart phone" is a bit of a misnomer, since it's just a phone with a more advanced operating system and features. It's not really that "smart." However, some researchers are trying to work on ways to make your phone much smarter. Since the phone is always with you, and so involved in much of your daily activities, they figure, why not let the phone monitor your activities and try to help out, by predicting certain activities or providing intelligent reminders? It's a nice idea -- if it works. However, most attempts to do this even on desktop machines, with much more powerful processors, haven't worked particularly well. Of course, there will also be those who worry about the privacy implications of your phone "knowing too much" about you, especially when it will be possible for others to get that info out of your phone. Still, expect plenty of work to be done (along with plenty of hype) in this area, as the previously overhyped idea of the "personal intelligent agent" returns from its brief hiatus. This time, though, it won't be stuck in a desktop machine, but always at your side in a mobile device.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Not really all that smart

"Data is then stored on a server which uses software to recognise any patterns in behaviour and predict what may happen next."
So actually, the phone itself isn't all that smart, it's just brim-full of privacy-invading gadgets, right?

    Ask a bartender...

When there's a cluster of bars within an area they'll get a dozen cellular phones turned-in in a weekend (here, Thu. through Sun. nights). People put chains on their wallets... but.
