Nintendo Sells 500k DS Handhelds
Just one week after launch, Nintendo has announced they have already sold half a million units. 'Sold' being a key term here, contrasting with when Nokia announced 400k 'shipped' N-Gage devices after just one month, but they were just stagnating in retail channels. It seems Nintendo, the market leader in handheld gaming, is continuing its success with a holiday season debut of 500k unit sales the US alone, and with sales outstripping supply. The Nintendo DS has two screens, and also two types of wireless connections: Bluetooth for local inter-player gaming with up to 16 players, and WiFi to connect to the Internet and multiplayer servers. Also included is a chat app, PictoChat, so players can jibe at opponents. There is no WWAN radio, meaning that (unlike the N-Gage) this device cannot act as a cell phone, or connect to wide area wireless networks.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
