Samsung Edges Past Motorola In Unit Sales
After nipping at Motorola's heels for some time, Samsung has finally tackled the second place spot from the Chicagoland handset maker, selling 22.98M handsets in the 3rd quarter of 2004 to Motorola's 22.39M. That gives Samsung a 13.8% market share, still well behind leader Nokia who stopped its slide by bouncing slightly to 30.9%. Meanwhile, on the other side of Seoul, LG Electronics edged out SonyEricsson for the #5 spot with a 6.7% market share. Motorola, long accused of having boring terminals (how many cool phones have they had since the StarTac?) is expected to bounce back into the #2 slot because of two reasons: it has excess inventory in the channels which will probably be discounted, and they are finally starting to produce some exciting handsets, like the new Razr, which will be sold by Cingular. It should be fun to watch the competition as these two battle it out for the #2 spot...and as everyone tries to take a bite outta Nokia. Competition is good!Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
