Woot! That's A Lot Of Money...

from the not-bad,-not-bad... dept

I have to admit that I'm one of the growing number of folks addicted to Woot, the online electronics store that sells one item each day until it sells out. It's basically taking the concept of the Home Shopping Network to the internet, and focusing on super cheap gadgets. There have been some really great deals there, and the community is pretty loyal (if amusing in the forums, sometimes). However, it appears that Woot is finally getting some more mainstream attention, as the company is admitting that it's going to bring in $5 to $10 million this year (which is actually just five months) with only six employees. Of course, that may not be as impressive as it really sounds. There's no indication on margins. While the company says it's profitable, you never know at this point. I could do $5 to $10 million in revenue if I started giving away $1 bills for $0.90. There already have been a few sites that have copied Woot's gimmick (and even their site's look and feel), so the interesting thing is whether Woot really has built up a strong enough community to keep it going. My gadget collection hopes so, though my wallet may have a different opinion.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Wat's like a da Woot?

Which sites, pray tell, are emulating Woot with similar offers? Inquiring minds want to know.

    Others?

What are some of the other such sites? I'd like to see them -- and make myself poorer. I'm already a Woot addict, too.

    Thanks,
    Rike

    WOOT sucks

    Woot lacks basic customer service.
They are not testing their products and will get burned as their sales volume increases.

Several products sold on their site had major manufacturing flaws. While the manufacturer in some cases will replace the item, in case with HP 3210 All-In-One printer HP will not replace my printer. Woot's website states one year HP warranty. However HP claims since printer is a refurbushed dicontinued item there is no warranty. HP refuses to replace this printer without upfront cost to me.

    GrepText

I always check these sites when I need new gear. They have some high quality stuff! I actually started using this site http://www.greptext.com/ It will send you text messages when woot or whiskeymilitia or any of those DoD sites has items you are specifically looking for. You give it a list of keywords and when one of those words appears in a deal it text messages you the deal. It also works with other similar sites.. No junk or spam texts too which is nice..
