Internet Alcohol Sales Question Hits The Supreme Court
from the how-badly-do-they-want-to-order-out-of-state-wine? dept
While it's been talked about for ages, it looks like the question of whether or not states can ban inter-state internet orders of alcohol is finally going to the Supreme Court, following a long series of earlier cases in the lower courts, often with contradictory rulings. This isn't just about alcohol, either, but other prohibitions on e-commerce, such as bans on ordering contact lenses online. How the Court rules is likely to have a major impact on a variety of businesses, and could be a proxy for a variety of other questions concerning how the "online" jurisdiction works with offline jurisdictions -- a question that courts all over the world have been avoiding as much as they can.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Why not use mail-order laws here?
Is there any good reason to not apply these laws to online orders?
Of course, if the non-online laws doesn't make sense...
